How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter in Bakersfield?

The short answer: check it every month and replace it at least every three months. That’s the general guidance from ENERGY STAR. In Bakersfield, with the AC running most of the day from May through September, a standard 1-inch filter often needs changing every month or two.

Why it matters more here

Bakersfield air carries a lot of fine dust. In the American Lung Association’s 2026 State of the Air report, Bakersfield ranked as the most polluted U.S. city for year-round particle pollution. Add farm dust, windy days and wildfire smoke in late summer, and your filter catches a lot of what makes it inside.

When a filter loads up, less air moves across the coil. The system runs longer to cool the house, your bill goes up, and in bad cases the indoor coil freezes. In winter a choked filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off.

Change it sooner if

  • You have dogs or cats
  • Someone in the house has allergies or asthma
  • There’s been smoke in the air, or a few windy, dusty days
  • You’ve had remodeling or drywall work done
  • The house is closed up and the AC runs all day

Thicker 4- or 5-inch media filters hold more and last longer than 1-inch filters. Follow the replacement interval on the filter or your system’s manual.

Which filter to buy

Start with the size printed on the frame of the old filter, for example 16x25x1. Then look at the MERV rating:

  • MERV 8 is a solid everyday filter that catches dust and pollen.
  • MERV 11 to 13 catches finer particles, including more of the smoke. The EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke season if your system can handle it.

That last part matters. Higher-rated filters are denser, and some systems, especially with a single 1-inch filter slot, can lose airflow with them. If you’re not sure what yours can take, ask us at your next visit.

How to change it

  1. Turn the system off at the thermostat.
  2. Find the filter. It’s usually behind a return grille on a wall or ceiling, or in a slot at the furnace or air handler.
  3. Note the arrow on the frame. It points in the direction the air flows: away from the return grille and toward the equipment.
  4. Slide the new filter in and write the date on the frame so you know when it went in.

A filter check is part of every HVAC maintenance visit, along with cleaning the coils and testing the parts that tend to fail in the heat. If your system is already struggling, see what to check when the AC is blowing warm air, or call (661) 889-0990.

Quick answers

How often should I change my AC filter in Bakersfield?

Check it every month and replace it at least every three months. With the AC running most of the summer, a standard 1-inch filter often needs changing every month or two.

What MERV rating should I use?

MERV 8 is a good everyday filter. MERV 11 to 13 catches finer particles, including smoke, but some systems lose airflow with denser filters, so check what your system can handle.
